Week 44: Oct 28-Nov 3

This week was a sad week for couponers. Save On Foods finally changed their stacking policy so you can no longer stack coupons that say "limit one coupon per purchase". This phrase is on almost every coupon out there. Frankly i'm not surprised. I hardly stack coupons anymore and have found more in-store deals lately than ever. If you know me I don't purchase items just because I have a coupon for them, i'm very picky what I buy and try to eat very healthy. For this reason our family is still a bit affected by this new policy, but not nearly as much as those that rely strictly on getting things dirt cheap.

On a happier note I have been busy baking and freezing pumpkin this week. Pumpkin is a serious staple in our house. Last year we had just moved and didn't have time to bake and freeze any and we ran out in January. 10 months without pumpkin was just brutal. We have pumpkin at least once a week, which means I like to freeze around 50-60X4 cup bags for the year. Pumpkin Soup is one of our favorite things to make and costs me around $2 a crockpot (the pumpkin is free!). Since it typically lasts for dinner and lunch the next day we get 2 meals out of it, costing us under $1 a meal. This is definitely one way to save on groceries and get a healthy meal that you don't even have to budget for.

As we round the corner towards Christmas (only 7 weeks away!) here are the deals I scored this week:

Danino: $3.49X2 = $6.98 - 2X$1.00 = $4.98 = $2.49 each

So i'm actually done all my shopping for this week already. We did a Costco run and then got some produce and deli meat. Spent way over my 2 week budget, but it was our last Costco run until January, so we shouldn't be going over our budget again any time soon. Here are some of the deals:

The best deal of the week was by far the Cadbury Chocolate Bars at Save On Foods. If you managed to score the in-store tearpad (save $5 WUB 5 Kraft products) you would have gotten these full size chocolate bars for $0.25 cents a piece + tax, as they were on sale for $1.25 each and included in the promotion. Week 41: October 7-13 ($2000 in coupon savings!)

Well its 10 weeks will Christmas and 12 weeks till the end of the year. I finally reached $2000 in coupon savings...my goal was to spend no more than $5200 on groceries and save around $2500 using coupons...and by looking at the numbers I think in the next 2.5 months I can definitely reach that goal.

I had an amazing Thanksgiving weekend, we hosted and invited my parents and in-laws and my brother and his girlfriend came as well. It was nice to cook and spend time with everyone and share a meal. The turkey was huge so I have been busy this week in the kitchen making turkey soup and freezing it. We'll be eating lots of soup this winter which is hearty, healthy and cheap!

This week proved to be EXCEPTIONAL for deals. Scroll down to see what I got!

Week 35: August 26-September 1

So I spoke too soon last week...our salmon has been ordered but who knows when we are actually getting it?! The sockeye run will not be opened for recreational fishing this year due to low stocks, so i'm not even sure if we will be getting the fish we were promised..meanwhile we are out $90, so I am praying that either the fish show up or we get our $90 back.

Blog Changes and Eco-Friendly Laundry Solutions

So i'm making some changes to my blog next year. I will be keeping a yearly grocery total, but I won't be blogging as detailed about the deals I get. Instead i'll be focusing more on eco-friendly, natural and organic living.

This year I think I have shown that couponing can shave you thousands of dollars every year on basic things you use. However, I have also seen how easy it is for couponers to get so caught up in getting good deals that they needlessly clear shelves and purchase items that they otherwise wouldn't to fill their stockrooms. So are you really saving money then?

This next year I will be incorporating natural, chemical free, eco-friendly living with couponing. You can still save amazing amounts of money by using coupons on natural organic cereal, cleaning supplies and good wholesome food products that are good for you and the environment.

Here's a snippet of just what kind of useful information I will be blogging about:

Eco-Friendly Laundry Solutions

Ever wonder what kinds of chemicals you are coating your clothes in when you wash and dry them every week. Chemical perfumes in laundry detergent, fabric softeners and especially dryer sheets, all coat your clothes with a layer of toxic chemicals. When you wear those clothes, your body moisture causes those chemicals to come into contact with your skin and be absorbed directly into your bloodstream.

After doing hours of research on laundry soap, fabric softener and dryer sheets I decided to make the switch to some more eco-friendly choices; soap nuts and wool dryer balls.

Soap Nuts (1 kg bag ($18), 300 loads): Soap Nuts are actually a fruit, taken from the soapberry tree. Thanks to their high concentration of foaming "saponin," soap nuts are used throughout the world as cleaning agents.
Saponin is the chemical compound that makes soap nuts "sud." When they come into contact with water the soap nuts "sud" giving the same kind of reaction detergents aim to create with their lab-created surfactants. Saponin naturally softens fabrics are well, therefore the added benefit to using soap nuts is that you no longer need to use fabric softener. Soap nuts also work very similar to vinegar as they neutralize the odour of clothes especially sweat and mildew (towels). Soap nuts can also be turned into a liquid detergent simply by boiling them.

Wool Dryer Balls ($18 per set of 4): I've been using dryer balls for about 5 years now and love how they reduce drying time and the static in my clothes. Mine were getting old so I decided to buy some new ones and ordered some handmade ones from an Etsy Shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/CleanSypria

Wool soaks up some of the moisture in your laundry as it dries, but then evenly distributes it into the air – helping your dryer stay humid longer, which exponentially reduces static cling. In addition, this “soaking and releasing” action makes your clothes dry faster. And all of these things together mean fewer wrinkles. Best of all they last up to 5 years!

If you like the smell of liquid fabric softners out there you are in luck. Wool dryer balls can be scented with natural/essential oils so that you still get that lovely out of dryer smell without all the chemicals. I chose: Pear&Rosewood, Apricot&Chamomile, Vanilla&Pomegrante and Bergamont&Yuzu.

Week 34: August 19-25th (Salmon for a Year!)

So this week I had a marvelous revelation. You know that saying you have to spend $ to make $, its true, and I have twisted the saying to: You have to Spend $ to save $. This week Jared and I had an incredible opportunity to get some Sockeye Salmon for cheap...and when I say cheap I mean like 1/4 of the price you find in stores. Chilliwack is known for its AMAZING fishing. The Fraser River is loaded with salmon every year. However, with Jared's job and its odd hours it is sometimes hard for him to get out and fish at all. A contact through Jared's work was ordering whole Sockeye for $9.00 a fish through one of the local native bands in town, so we put in an order for 10. Sockeye have to be over a specific weight in order for you to be allowed to keep them, so I knew these fish were going to be big (about 4 fillets per fish). So we now have a freezer stocked full of 40 fillets of Sockeye, about enough for the next 3/4 of a year!

So that being said I may have gone a little overbored on salmon and coffee and applesauce this week, however my grocery total for next year is going to be much smaller with me not having to purchase any fish. Gotta Spend $ to Save $!

Here are my totals for week 34:

Week 33: August 12-18

So deals have really SUCKED lately. It seems there has been nothing "I" would personally buy on sale, so flyers have been a bit of a drag lately.

My husband and I finally purchased a deep freeze - he plans on going hunting this fall and getting a deer. The 5 cubic/ft freezer was a great deal at the Brick, we paid $212 and then it went on sale the next week for 20% off...so I got $28 back (they have a 90 day price guarantee). For any of you thinking of purchasing appliances there they also have an amazing 5 year warranty. For $60 if your appliance fails in the first 5 years they will give you a new one AND give you $500 towards replacing the food you lost. However, if you don't use the warranty they will give you a $60 credit to purchase something in their store. Its a WIN-WIN situation.

Although the flyers haven't been great I still managed to pick up a few things we needed at half the cost. Here's what I scored in week 33:

Safeway:

Fresh Brush Toilet Refill (12 pack): reg. $5.79, on sale $3.99 X 4 = $15.96 - 2XBOGO = $7.98 = $2.00 each! (1/3 OF THE REGULAR PRICE)

Astro Bio Best Yogurt (12 pk): $5.98 - $1.00 - $4.98

So we are half way through my experiment and blogging. I've been thinking a lot about what my blog will be about next year, how I want to change it, what things I want to blog about. Still in the process of deciding, but I know it will look a lot different than this years.

Week 23: June 3-9

So we're 3 weeks away from being half way through the year! I've definitely got to admit i've been completely slacking in the whole "coupon" world. I haven't joined very many trains lately, mail has been super slow, trades are almost impossible as everyone wants FPC's only and well lets face it, sales have been lacking big time. I feel like i'm in a rut, which is not good. It's not that I don't care about getting deals, i'm just not rushing to the stores to get them anymore. Despite the slump I picked up some great deals on juice, yogurt and almond milk this week. Lets see how I fared:

Week 21 + 22: May 20-June 2

I had so much going on this past week that I didn't have time to blog. So I decided I would combine both week 21 and 22 in one blog, since I really didn't do/need to do any shopping this past week. Week 21 my husband took our daughter and went camping. On the way back we stop in Bellingham at Costco. Since we were ALLOWED to bring back $200 in duty-free groceries each, we thought we'd take advantage. Also, while we were down the Canadian dollar was at par, making this trip extra great, as exchange was not even noticeable. Usually when we go down it is for 3 hours and technically you are not allowed any duty-free items (although we've never had to pay).

Costco: We bought the usual suspects that I always mention

So to add to me saving money, i've started buying Epicure from my best friend who started selling it. Epicure is all natural spices you add to fresh produce, pasta or canned items to make dips, salsas and other food dishes. In the long run buying a jar for $9.99 that can make 12 cups of dressing is way cheaper than buying processed salad dressing from Kraft. I decided to start investing in a collection that I would use. My total came to: $46.54 for 6 different spices/dips to make Tacos, Bean Dip, Chili, Mac&Cheese, Salsa and Greek Salad.

That said, i've been trying to cut down on the amount of groceries i'm purchasing and use up some stuff in the fridge and freezer before we leave on Friday. So next week's totals should be quite a bit lower i'm hoping.

Week 15: April 8-14

Isn't it hard to believe we are over 1/4 of the way through the year already. I find that hard to grasp!

Before getting to couponing, I want to tell you about this FANTASTIC blog I found this week. For those of you that don't know i'm really into collecting junk/collectibles and old stuff and using it in decor. I've recently started collecting old window pains and using them as picture frames (an idea I found on Pinterest). My husband and I also really have feel in love with some of the stuff you can build with pallets. This week I was browsing Pinterest and came across this photo:

I just fell in LOVE with this piece. Turns out if you click on the picture it takes you to this blog called "Funky Junk Interiors". I read the entire blog and loved everything this woman picked up and made from old stuff that was just thrown away. Turns out she's a Christian AND lives in Comox, BC. How cool is that. We are practically neighbors. Turns out that she has a tutorial on how to make this exact pallet bench on her blog. The next day my husband and I went out and got a beautiful cushion at Walmart and some pallets (Home Depot just puts them out back) and started making it. I'll be sure to post a picture when it's all finished. In the mean time enjoy Donna's blog, maybe you'll find some inspiration: http://funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.ca/.

Week 14: April 1-7 Happy Easter

Not sure where my head has been at this past week. Typically we go to one of our parents for Easter, so when Saturday hit, I realized "I" had to cook dinner this year. I also forgot my husband has sales training this week in Vancouver, so he won't be home till dinner time on Tuesday. So, basically my meal planning for the week needed to be juggled around. Here's what it looks like now:

Saturday - Rosemary Chicken Bake with Roasted Veggies
Sunday - Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, Honey Carrots and Pie!
Tuesday - Soup Night - Beer, Bacon and Cheese Soup
Wednesday - Fish Night - Seasame Crusted Salmon, Quinoa and Peas
Thursday - Taco Night
Friday - Red Meat Night - Spagetti

Saturday - BBQ Night - Hotdogs and Potato Salad (Next Week)

Almost no mail this week, however I would like to mention March was AWESOME for freebies! Not only did I get some coupon related freebies (like my free Schik razor) I also got the following:

-Free Boots from livingsocial.com (3 other people bought my deal - via my link, so I got them for FREE!)
- Free $10 amazon.ca giftcard from Superpoints.ca.
-Free $10 Chapter's card thanks to Tammy from UPCSavings.com. Everyone had to take a guess on how much she spent on 3 items. I came the closest and won.
-Free windowpane that I am making into a frame for pictures
-Free TOMS  - I entered a contest with a local shop here called Unika and won their monthly draw!

Meal Planning!

So over the past few weeks i've been trying to figure out how to save myself even more money. I do pretty well in the grocery store, however I have been finding that lately I just go and get the weekly deals and come home and try to make sense of what to make. Very frustrating. More often then not I find I am missing an ingredient or I don't have enough to make a meal.

Last summer, when things were not as hectic, I did meal planning for 8 weeks. I loved it! Every night I knew what we were having and when I went to the grocery store I picked up exactly what I needed to make that week's meals.

So to keep me accountable I am starting a meal planning segment to my blog. Every week (most likely on Thursday or Friday) after i've had a chance to look at that weeks fliers, I will post what I will be making for dinner. Here's what i've planned for this week:

Saturday - Rosemary Chicken Bake with Roasted Veggies (grape tomatoes, olives, zucchini)
Need to buy: grape tomatoes, zucchini, kalamata olives

Baking (Saturday is baking for the week): Gingery Oatmeal Molasses Cookies (recipe from Canadian Family magazine)
Need to Buy: Rolled Oats, Molasses

Sunday - Soup Night - Beer, Cheese and Bacon Soup
Need to Buy: 1 pkg. Bacon

Monday - Breakfast for Dinner Night - Puffed Apple Pancake
Need to Buy: 1 Granny Smith Apple

Tuesday - BBQ Night - Hotdogs and Potato Salad
Need to Buy: Mini Red Potatoes (Superstore $1.94 this week)

Wednesday - Fish Night - Seasame Crusted Salmon, Quinoa and Peas
Need to Buy: Salmon

Thursday - Taco Night
Need to Buy: Taco Kit ($3.47 Walmart), Sour Cream, Ground Beef

Friday - Red Meat Night - Spagetti
Need to Buy: -- (use leftover ground beef from Tacos)

I was pretty happy with this menu as it is all healthy, complete meals and were having something different everynight!

Saturday 31 March 2012

Week 13: March 25-31st (Is Couponing really saving me money?)

So I had this thought in my head all week. How much stuff am I buying simply because I have a coupon, which in turn makes it a good deal? and would I normally buy it if it didn't have a coupon?

Looking through my lists over the last 3 months I think there are a lot of things I wouldn't normally buy if I didn't have a coupon; mainly snacks. I wonder if I would spend less by simply only buying staple foods (meat, veggies, milk, cheese, yogurt, bread etc.) when it is on sale, without coupons. Just "food" for thought I suppose! (no pun intended).

Not many groceries needed this week. Here's the few good deals I did get:

Week 12: Mar 18- Mar 24 (Costco Run)

This week was all about the Costco Run. We only go every 8 weeks, so when we do I get excited. 1- Because I love all natural and organic products which you can only get at Costco in the States (not in Canada!) and 2- I love getting stuff in bulk for cheap!

But, before we get to the details of our special trip here are the other great deal we scored this week:

Walmart:

Campbell's Broth: on sale. $2.00X2 = $4.00 - $100 WUB 2 = $3.00 = $1.50 per carton
Paper Towel (8 pk): on sale. $2.97 - $2.00 = $0.97 cents!
Minigo Yogurt (6pk): $2.87X2 = $5.74 - 2X$0.50 = $4.74 = $2.37 per pack
Black Diamond Cheese Bar: $5.97 (no coupons but a really good deal)
Eyeliner: $1.00 (no coupons but a really good deal)
Avacado: 67 cents X 4 = $2.68 (no coupons but a really good deal)
**Deal of the Week:
Rice Krispie Granola Bars - FREE!
So the story with this is that these were posted in the store for $1.67. I have a $1.50 off coupon, which would have made them $0.17 cents. However, when I got to the till they rang in as $2.67. So I asked the cashier to apply the sores Scanning Code of Practice (SCOP).

SCOP - If the scanned price of an item is higher than the shelf price or any other displayed price, the customer is entitled to receive the item free, up to a $10 maximum. When identical items are incorrectly priced, the second one will be sold at the correct price.

Coupon Trains for Beginners

When you see coupons they're not always ones you'd use. If you have a baby, diaper and wipes coupons are probably like gold to you. However people who don't have children would typically walk right past a pampers coupon if they ever saw one in stores.

With Coupon Trains, you keep what you can use and then send the ones you would ever use in an envelope to the next person on the train. If I'm the person before you on the train (still assuming you have a baby), you're thrilled to get so many pampers coupons. When you take out $10 in coupons, you put in $10+ in your coupons, send it to the next person on the list and they then take out coupons you thought were useless but they needed. Make sense?

The best place to get started is the Coupon Train list on smartcanucks.ca. Here's the link:

http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/canadian-coupons-trains/

In the title of a train it will say 'looking for riders' or something like that if it hasn't already left the station. Click on the train title, READ the instructions and see if you qualify to board the train. In order to get on most trains, you need a trade rating. The trade rating is a symbol for trust. The best way to get a trade rating is to join trains that say "for newbies" or join trains with NO rating requirement. The best trains to join are ones that say "Traditional Train". As a beginner I would highly suggest not joining Virtual Wishlist Trains (VWT). They are complicated and take up a lot of time.

If you meet all the requirements that the "conductor" (person that is hosting the train) lists than click on 'SendPM' at the bottom of their post. Send them a private message with the train title and your name and address. If you are selected to be on the train they will contact you back. A train takes 6-10 people, they are all written on a list and then the list is mailed with the coupons in an envelope. Once the list is made the train is closed. Some trains have unique requirements (grocery coupons only, must contribute at least one FPC, western providences only, etc.). Make sure you can meet all requirements before asking to join.

Also, conductors will ask for something in return from each rider as a "Thank You" to them for hosting the train, this is called a "Boarding Pass". Typically they request 2 or 3 new postage stamps or a few coupons off their wishlist (which they will include). The envelope you receive will have a plastic ziploc or something similar inside for you to put your "Boarding Pass" in. This may sound complicated, however it usually just takes joining a few to get the hang of it.

Once you receive a train you just follow the instructions. Take out all the coupons you want, add up the total, and put in $ for $, Buy One Get One for Buy One Get One back in the envelope, have it weighed at the post office and sent to the next rider. Many conductors will expect you to post back in the thread when you received the envelope and list how much you took out and how much you put back in (you can always put more in than you took out).

Once the conductor receives the envelope back they will rate each rider with a +1 or -1. This is your trade rating. The more trains you ride successfully, the better your trade rating and the better Coupon Trains you will be able to get on.

Here is what a typical Traditional Coupon Train post would look like:

This train will contain over $100 in coupons, no TFT, Printed, Internet or insert coupons. All coupons expire on or after March 31st 2012. Train consist of no more then two of each coupon

I will be taking 6 riders plus myself so 7 in total. I will determine the order once I get the riders.

Rules are simple
MUST HAVE A TRADE RATING OVER 10 TO RIDE
*replace $ for $, B?G?,
* please post in thread when received, in's, out's and date mailed
*please replace with April 1 2012 or later expiries
*no more then two of the same coupons, please
*include boarding in the baggie provided.
*please bring envelope to post office within 24 hrs of receiving and get proper postage
*please put the name of the train on the envelope so riders know which train it is
*once you receive train please leave feedback for conductor, i will leave feedback for riders once train returns home

Boarding pass 2 unused postage stamps

If you would like a seat please PM me your address and include train name and post in thread. Thanks

I would be happy to answer any questions anyone has in order to get you started. Happy Riding!

Week 8: Jan 19-25

This week certainly had a lot of ups and downs. Mail was pretty good, 3 coupon trains with some excellent coupons I had never seen before for bread, snacks and canned goods. Finally received my Free Liberte yogurt coupon (still waiting for 2 more) and also 2 coupons for a free pack of Dempster's Bagels (used them today).

On the down side my daughter was sick with the flu. I have determined I now loath Pamper's diapers as they have proved to leak; resulting in poop all over my house. To top it all off this weekend she pulled a glass piggy bank down off a bookshelf, which hit her on the head; Saturday was spent at the walk-in clinic and then taking it easy to make sure she didn't have any serious side effects. After such a crazy week I definitely needed to get out of the house for some coupon therapy (lol!)

Week 7: Feb 12-18

So this week I didn't get out much. Not many sales, except I got a really cool recliner/rocking chair for $10 from a swap site on facebook. In beautiful condition and they even delivered it (I'll post a picture in a bit). Mail was also slow, I only received 2 coupon trains, 2 envelopes from websaver.ca and my free Kellogg's Vector T-shirt that I ordered back in Week 1. My neighbor, who is a dental receptionist also dropped off 30 trial size toothpastes. She was cleaning out her cupboards and asked if I wanted them, or course I said YES! A little surprised I didn't get my Dempster's Free Bagel coupons or my Free Liberte Yogurt coupons...hopefully this week.

I always look forward to Thursday's as that is when all the flyers are delivered in the paper. Some great deals this week, most started Friday so I ventured out for a few things at Shopper's Drug Mart and bought some groceries at Superstore that you can't use coupons on, I also headed back to Home Depot to get more of the .29 cent Dawn, bought 6 more bottles for a total of $1.74 (saved $3.00). Where Do I Find Coupons?

So I figured that after a few weeks of posting my sales a few of you are probably wondering...

WHERE THE HECK DOES SHE GET HER COUPONS FROM? and HOW CAN I SAVE THAT MUCH?

The whole idea of me starting this blog is to show people a few things:

1. Saving money is EASY and no you dont have to spend hours a day clipping, ordering and organizing coupons
2. Eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive (coming soon...Meals of the Week: What exactly do I eat every week and how much does it really cost?)
3. Stockpiling does not have to be like you see on TV (a whole room that looks like a grocery store) and can be very useful for those products you use all the time.

RESOURCES:

Savealoonie.ca is an online Canadian resource which I found a few months ago. This website is run by a couple from Ontario. It gives you information on everything from learning how to coupon to where to find coupons to the latest freebies in Canada.

My other trusted source I use is called Smartcanucks.ca. This website also gives up to date freebies and coupon information, but also has the link to Canada-wde coupon trains (which I will get to later)

WHERE DO I FIND MY COUPONS?

There are many ways that you can get coupons. Lots are printable (which I don't use), some can be ordered and shipping to you via mail, some can be obtained through facebook offers by "Like"ing the companies Facebook page and others through Coupon Trains (my next post will be on this).

To start, there are a few great online resources which mail coupons to you. All you have to do is order them.

1. websaver.ca
2. save.ca
3. brandsaver.ca
4. gocoupons.ca

These websites also have what is called "Hidden Portals" which are hidden links to other coupons you can order through them. You can find the list of "Hidden Portals" here:

-Websaver.ca hidden portals (http://www.savealoonie.com/hidden-websaver-coupons/)
-Save.ca hidden portals (http://www.savealoonie.com/hidden-save-ca-coupons/)
-Brandsaver.ca hidden portals (http://www.savealoonie.com/expired-mail-coupons/all-hidden-brandsaver-coupons/)

I suggest ordering ALL the coupons they have (i'll explain why in my next post), as coupons for products you don't use can be traded in coupon trains; one mans junk is another man's treasure.

Happy Ordering!

Week 6: Feb 5-11

My weekend/week was pretty busy as it was my birthday...3 days of lovely gifts and outings and great shopping. My husband told me to go shopping for clothes for my birthday. Whoever knows me, knows I HATE the mall. Winners is my place to shop, but they are in the middle of transitioning seasons so I found nothing there. On a last ditch effort I decided to quickly browse the Bay. They were having a 70% off the original ticket price sale; I got 2 shirts, a sweater (Reg $65) for $21 and a tank top (Reg $35) for $9. Looks like there are still Winter Sales to be found in some places.

Monday was great for mail. I got my TOMS flats that I ordered (I used birthday money from my parents and my in-laws) so they were FREE for me (ended up shipping them back for a bigger size-BOO!) and my FREE Yoga Mat from Kellogg's from the .94 cent boxes of Special K that I bought a few weeks ago. I also got 2 more BOGO Peek Frean coupons (which I gave to my mom), 2 envelopes from websaver.ca and 3 coupon trains loaded full of great coupons that I have been wanting/needing. Sales were excellent this week, here are a few of the highlights:
